Varbola Dairy

History and restoration

Varbola Meierei

116 years of history and dignity

Location – Rapla County, Märjamaa Rural Municipality, Varbola Village

The Varbola Dairy, founded in 1909, is one of the few remaining stone dairy buildings in Estonia. This historic building is located in the village of Varbola, Märjamaa parish, Rapla County, and has a rich history that dates back over a century. The building was a modern production unit for its time, producing dairy products for local farms and the region’s residents. The dairy was important for the economic development of the region, providing jobs for locals and supporting the growth of the dairy industry.

Now we have set out to restore this valuable heritage and transform it into a luxury boutique spa complex with a hotel, restaurant and other exclusive spaces and services.

1940-1991 - Soviet period

During the Soviet era, the dairy continued to operate, but production was focused on large-scale tasks. The building was used for dairy production, but over time it began to suffer from a lack of maintenance. During this period, the dairy lost its original purpose and became part of a larger industrial complex.

In 1974, the Varbola library was transferred from the Märjamaa village TSN TK to the Rapla district TSN TK education department. In October 1975, the library moved to the dairy building together with the Varbola velskripunt. The reason for the move was the new management of the Varbola state farm wanted to expand the office at the expense of the library premises. The closure of the state farm allowed the library to move back to the state farm office. The owner of the library also changed.

1991-2021 - Märjamaa Consumers' Association store and apartments

After Estonia regained its independence, the building continued to serve as a store for the Märjamaa Consumers’ Association, maintaining its place at the center of local life.

Four social apartments were built in one wing of the building, which became home to several local families. These apartments were full of life and stories, adding warmth and community spirit to the building.  Although the historical value of the building was overshadowed, it retained its unique atmosphere and traditions, which were carried on by both the shop visitors and the apartment residents.
